The Appeal of Conscience Foundation strongly condemns the horrific attack on the synagogue, Addas Israel Congregation in Australia. Such acts of violence against places of worship are an affront to the very principles of peace, freedom, and mutual respect that underpin our societies. The Appeal of Conscience Foundation has long advocated for the protection of religious institutions, having secured, in 2001, the passage of a United Nations resolution that safeguards houses of worship worldwide.
We urgently call upon Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, in lieu of this horrific attack and increased Antisemitic activity, to immediately strengthen resources and funding to enhance security measures, ensuring the safety of synagogues, Jewish institutions and the Jewish Community of Australia.
An attack on a house of worship is not just an assault on the faithful, but an attack on the heart of society itself, targeting the values that bind us together. It is imperative that we remain vigilant in defending the sanctity of religious freedoms and take all necessary steps to protect these sacred spaces.
