Appeal of Conscience Delegation to Spain

“December 9-14, 1967”

ACF interfaith delegation meets with officials in Spain regarding the challenges of non-Catholics in Spain. There are over 30,000 Protestants and 7500 Jews concerned with Article 17 which stipulated that non-Catholic religious groups submit a full list of their members by December 31, 1967. ACF challenged the constitution which guarantees religious freedom to all. Questioning why weren’t all religious groups required to register. Delegation met with: Casimiro Morcillo, Archbishop of Madrid, Dr. Cardona, leading Protestant churchman, Mr. Max Mazin, President of the Madrid Jewish Community, Cardinal Fernando Quiroga, President of the Spanish Bishops Conference, Minister of Justice, Antonio Oriol, Minister of Justice under-secretary, Alfredo Lopez and the Minister of Foreign Affairs. ACF was able to extend the deadline from December 31, 1967 to May 31, 1968 to allow for further discussion.
